By Jennifer Rannazzisi with If You Can Dream It Travel
If you’ve ever dreamed of running through the most magical place on Earth, participating in a Disney World half marathon should definitely be on your bucket list. The experience combines the thrill of running with the enchantment of Disney, creating an unforgettable race. However, as with any race, preparation is key! Here’s what you can expect and some tips to help make your Disney half marathon experience as smooth and magical as possible.
The Early Morning Wake-Up Call
The race day starts early, and we mean early! Be prepared for a 3 AM wake-up call (yes, you read that right). Disney races are known for their early starts to avoid the Florida heat, but it’s also a great way to experience the parks in a new light (literally). Depending on where you're staying, you'll need to factor in transportation time to get to the start line. Disney offers transportation from its resorts to the race start, so if you’re staying on property, be sure to plan to catch a bus or other transportation around 3:30 AM at the latest.
Fireworks and the Start Line
One of the highlights of a Disney race is the start line fireworks. After the pre-race entertainment and a quick round of stretching, the race kicks off with a spectacular display of fireworks, lighting up the sky as you cross the start line. There’s something truly magical about running through the parks with that burst of excitement. It’s not just a race, it’s a celebration!
Character Meet-and-Greets: Before and During the Race
What sets a Disney race apart from other half marathons is the opportunity to meet iconic Disney characters along the course. Before the race, you’ll see several characters, including princesses, classic Disney villains, and even Mickey and Minnie themselves. Don’t be shy—take a quick photo if you like! The lines are usually shorter before the race starts, so it’s a great opportunity to get your pictures without losing too much time.
As you make your way through the course, you’ll also encounter more character stops. While these meet-and-greets add time to your race, they’re one of the most unique and fun parts of the experience. Disney even places these stops at strategic points where you can take a quick break, snap a photo, and still get back into the race. Keep in mind, though, that waiting for a character photo can slow your pace, so if you’re aiming for a specific time or need to keep moving to stay ahead of the “balloon ladies” (the sweep crew), be mindful of the character stops.
Porter Potty Advice
Porter potties are a key part of any race day experience, and the Disney half marathon is no different. There are plenty of them at the start line and along the course. It's actually quite amazing just how good they do with this. However, be prepared for long lines, especially before the race begins. The best tip? Plan to visit them as soon as you arrive at the race start, and not just before the race begins. That way, you’ll avoid the last-minute rush, and it will give you a bit of extra peace of mind as you wait for the race to begin. You can also use some bathrooms along the course inside the parks!
Layer Up and Donate!
Florida mornings can be chilly, especially in the early hours before sunrise. Dress in layers that you can easily shed once the race starts. While it may be cool before the race, you’ll warm up quickly as you run, so it’s important to have a plan for those extra clothes. Disney encourages runners to wear layers that can be discarded along the course, as any clothes you toss will be donated to charity. This makes for a win-win situation—you stay warm while waiting for the race, and your discarded clothing goes to a good cause!
Charge Your Headphones & Fuel for the Race
While running through Disney World is an experience in itself, many runners like to listen to music or podcasts to help pass the time, especially on the longer parts of the course. Make sure to charge your headphones fully the night before the race. You don’t want to be halfway through the race and realize your playlist is stuck on silence!
Fueling is another important consideration. Whether it’s energy gels, chews, or snacks, be sure to bring your own race fuel. While there are water and Powerade stations along the course, having your own nutrition on hand ensures that you’re not relying on the race aid stations alone, especially if you’re used to specific fueling strategies. Remember, nothing new on race day! Stick with what you used to train.
Hydrate: Water vs. Powerade
As you run, it’s crucial to stay hydrated. Alternate between water and Powerade at the aid stations, especially during longer runs like a half marathon. Water will keep you hydrated, while Powerade will help replenish electrolytes and give you a little extra energy boost. Plan to drink regularly, even if you don’t feel thirsty, to avoid dehydration later in the race.
Training and Staying Ahead of the "Balloon Ladies"
A Disney half marathon is not an easy race, so make sure to train appropriately! Be ready to maintain a pace of at least a 16-minute mile to stay ahead of the "balloon ladies"—the sweep crew who ensure that runners finish within the allotted time. If you fall behind, the balloon ladies will encourage you, you can even walk with them, but you must keep up! If you can’t, you will be gently guided off the course in a bus to the finish line. A proper training regimen is crucial to ensure you’re in the best shape possible for race day.
Race Etiquette
As you’re running through the course, it’s important to follow standard race etiquette to ensure a smooth experience for everyone. Here are a few tips:
1. Stay to the right: The left side of the course is usually reserved for faster runners. Stay to the right if you’re running at a slower pace or if you plan to walk.
2. Don’t block the course: If you need to stop for a photo or to stretch, step off to the side to avoid blocking other runners.
3. Be courteous to others: A simple "on your left" or "excuse me" goes a long way, especially when you need to pass other runners.
4. Respect character stop lines: Don’t cut in line at the character meet-and-greets. It’s all part of the fun!
Running a half marathon at Disney World is an experience unlike any other. From the early morning wake-up to the magical fireworks start, character meet-and-greets, and the excitement of running through Disney World’s iconic parks, it’s a race you’ll remember forever. Be sure to train well, hydrate properly, and take in all the magic Disney has to offer. And most importantly, enjoy the journey—it’s not just about finishing, but about making memories along the way!
Happy running!
